One of the problems of gourmet living is cholesterol. My mother-in-law’s cholesterol is 278. My aunt has always had high cholesterol. So even if we never ate gourmet food we’d probably have cholesterol problems (at least Marita’s side of the family would). So my son got us some flaxseed mix. The brand is Barlean’s Forti-Flax. It’s supposed [...]

It seems we’ve been having a lot of Peruvian food lately. Tonight, we had Peruvian tamales. They’re a lot richer than Mexican tamales which tend to be blander. The tamales had the usual corn masa but also had pork, peanuts, and olives. Marita got them from a Peruvian lady at the UN. It’s the same stuff served [...]

This is a great video clip of Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin playing in San Sebastian, Spain. It would have been fantastic to watch the two play and then eat at El Bulli or Arzak! Sayang. Some of Marita’s St Scho friends ate at Arzak. I think may Filipino na nagluluto doon. Our strategy [...]

Marita and I were craving halo-halo today and so we called Relyn. She recommended Grill 21 on 21st between 1st & 2nd. We’ve been looking for a good Filipino restaurant since Krytal left town. We really like Grill 21; it’s much better than Krystal or Elvi’s. They don’t have anything really exotic, no fusion type [...]

Well – it looks like Abe & Mayu have eaten at a place that is a favorite of Chef Michael White of Alto Restaurant. It’s Sripraphai in Queens. Marita and I must really head out to Queens. That seems to be where everything’s happening food-wise these days. Other chef favorites: Bar Stuzzichini and Chelsea Thai [...]

A non food-related post for a change . . . here’s a cute joke from Sylvs.
A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre. After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van.
However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran [...]

Abe was right about the permit problem at Red Hook Ball Fields. Apparently, the Latino food vendors are afraid that they may lose their licenses. I’m not quite sure what the problem is. Also, it seems the customer base is changing. It used to be mostly Latinos; now there are more and more white faces. So [...]

We had Indian for Sunday lunch. There’s a tiny Indian restaurant called “The Indian Chef” in Maywood, NJ inside a big international food store next to a National Liquidators. For you city people – National Liquidators is one of the best places to go for really cheap household stuff. I got 2 packs of briefs [...]

This will probably be the last restaurant we go to for Restaurant Week. No – we did not have caviar, or truffles or foie gras. I just like this picture. Masyadong mahal na. We’ve been eating all week. We came in with very moderate expectations and we were again pleasantly surprised. Marita had a nice [...]

I’ve never been to a Charlie Palmer restaurant (except Metrazur). Aureole however did not disappoint. For appetizer, I had chilled sweet pea soup with crab crisp, lemon & pepper cream, shaved radishes. Looked kinda like the picture here. The crab crisp was like a small breadstick with crabmeat inside. It was great to dip the warm [...]
