We’ve been going to Wonton Garden on Mott Street for at least 25 years now. But we hadn’t been there in at least 6
months. So you would think that when the waiters saw us last night, they would have at least recognized us and given us a more friendly welcome. Not a chance. Kahit tumawa – parang hirap na hirap sila. I had my usual – wonton with noodles for $3.75. Marita splurged and ordered beef stew with wonton noodles ($4.75 yata). We also had roast pork fried rice. The total bill was less than the tips at any of restaurants we ate at during Restaurant Week. It’s not in Aureole’s league but it’s consistently good. I haven’t had a bad wonton ever. And cheap – they haven’t changed their prices in years.
I’ve made it a point to get to know the owners and waiters in restaurants these days. Maybe I will try to get acquainted with
the Wonton Garden waiters. (The owner is friendly enough). There is this one tall waiter who has really aged that we might strike a conversation with one of these days. Wala na yata yung Filipino-Chinese waiter. I’ve often wondered where they live, if they have children, if they’re illegal aliens . . .
Oh, BTW – if you’re wondering why I have a picture of the New York Michelin Guide book in this post, it’s because Wonton Garden was recently rated (pretty well) by this gourmet authority. Kahit mura – gourmet pa rin

Wonton Garden is also one of our old time favorites.
