We went this weekend to Rhinebeck in upstate New York, one of the last places that show working WW I planes. The airshow featured classic biplanes and triplanes including German Fokkers (the Red Baron’s favorite), French Spads and a variety of US aircraft. We even got to fly in a 1929 200 HP Standard D-25 biplane. So Marita had her Karen Blixen moment, flying not over the African plains, but over the Hudson Valley. I’m still quite surprised that she actually suggested that we fly in a plane that’s maintained by volunteers. The wings’ skin is actually made of stretched canvas . . .
