Bouchon Bakery

We’ve never eaten at a Thomas Keller restaurant. Everytime I visited San Francisco in the late ’90s, I would always try to get a table at the French Laundry, but I never succeeded. We could try for Per Se at the Time Warner building but I don’t really want to spend that much money, at least not now. My son Mark and his girlfriend Cindy dined there about a year ago; they say it was one of their best meals ever.

Well, I’ve finally tried some of Mr. Keller’s cooking, albeit just one of his desserts. For $2.75 ($3 with tax), I got one of his sticky buns at Bouchon Bakery in the Time Warner building. Marita, my niece Ceres and I shared it after a nice Thai dinner at Pimaan restaurant in Emerson. Those sticky buns would always be sold out everytime I would drop by. I finally got to buy one – just one – yesterday afternoon. I could have bought two, but one of the customers ahead of me bought a whole box, leaving just two buns, and the guy behind me said he wanted a sticky bun too. I could have ignored him and bought the two buns, but I didn’t have the heart.

Anyway – Keller’s sticky buns are good. Really moist, studded with roasted pecans, not as overpowering with cinnamon flavor as Cinnabon’s Pecanbon, and cheaper to boot. They’re great with port. I’ll buy a box next time.

BTW – a great place to get free and good food is at receptions for art exhibits and other events at the UN lobby. There was a reception last night for the “Year of the Potato” so I mingled with the guests. Yes, there were some potato hors d’ouevres which I tried. The best thing was the pisco sours. I had two of them and got a nice, quick buzz  . . .
