Belgian Comfort Food

Moules mariniere and frites – that’s about all I know about Belgian food, aside from their waffles and chocolate.  This afternoon, we went to Petit Abeille, a cozy little Belgian restaurant on 17th St and 7th.  They serve Belgian comfort food – various types of omelettes, croques monsieur and other sandwiches, and of course moules marinieres and lots of Belgian beers.  I didn’t have the mussels though.  I opted for a chicken vol au vent (basically chicken pastel) and Marita had a tomato bisque.  Mark had a croque monsieur.  Total bill (which included sparkling water, a coke and iced tea) was under $50.  Ever since Belgo left NYC, I’ve been looking for a good moules place.  This may be it.  (I’m not a big fan of Jubilee).

So we’ll be back.  On Wednesdays, it’s eat all you can mussels plus Stella Artois beer.  I’ll even pay extra and swap the Stella Artois for a Straffe Hendrik, a Belgian ale, and the best beer I’ve ever had in my life.
