Eating Flowers

It seems fitting to blog about eating flowers after my last post about scents.  When we visited the katuraySalcedo Market in Legazpi Village about 2 months ago, we came across some vendors who were selling edible flowers.  One of them was called katuray, a bright almost fuschia-colored flower that supposedly is good with salads.  This same vendor was also selling haricot vert, which he said they had managed to grow in the Calamba area.  There were a couple of French vendors hawking what looked like authentic French food; I’m sure they were happy to find real haricot vert locally.

Besides katuray, the vendor also showed us some small, bright wild flowers that he said were also good for adding color to salads.  I wonder how they taste?  They certainly looked very pretty!  Salcedo Market is a great place for foodies to visit.  There was a lot to see and taste when we were there.  “Dirty” queso ice cream; Breton buckwheat crepes; longaniza from Vigan, Lucban, Pampanga; wild mountain rice from Mountain Province; a whole cow roasting on a spit; crawfish-like crabs na ginata;langka, papaya, pineapple from Taiwan; smoked hams; broiled fish and squid; and lots of fruits and vegetables.

It’s certainly one of the more interesting markets we’ve seen.  We didn’t buy any of the edible flowers.  Instead we had some broiled prawns in wine at a stall manned by a Spanish restaurant (I forget the name).  They served it with rice in a syrofoam plate and we ate it under tents right inside the market.

Next time, I’ll buy Marita some flowers for dinner . . . to eat.
