Marita, Jay and I had lunch at Veselka on Sunday. It’s the second time for Marita and me, first
time for Jay.
I had bigos, which is a Ukrainian stew of kielbasa, roast pork, sauerkraut and onions, often referred to as a “hunter’s stew”. Marita and Jay tried a couple of pierogies, a potato pancake, kielbasa, and waffles with bananas. Jay also had some hot borscht that had some rather large beans, which I don’t think is typical in regular borscht. I prefer their cold borscht. We also ordered a 16 oz bottle of Obolon beer, the Ukraine’s San Miguel. Ukrainian fare leaves one invariably stuffed and warm; I can understand what a good thing that is in the cold climate of the Ukraine. If we come back while it’s still cold, maybe we’ll order some vodka.
