Marita and I, together with Mark and Cindy, celebrated Valentine’s Day at Bar Jamon, Mario Battali’s tapas restaurant on 17th and Irving Place. It was a great meal. We had manchego cheese with membrillo , a paste made from quince which tastes very much like our guava, a $30 plate of jamon iberico bellota, and pickled sardines.
For drinks, we had Áster Crianza 2002, a Spanish red with a very smooth finish and cava, the Spanish bubbly. Marita’s favorite was the churros y chocolate. Bar Jamon serves their rich, thick, slightly bitter chocolate in a small glass. You can’t drink it; it has a consistency between icing and light pudding. She cut the churros into small slices, and we picked them up with forks and dunked them into the chocolate. Yummy . . .
