Siomai At Mei Li Wah

Many Filipinos were heartbroken when Mei Lah Wah, the siopao place on Bayard St in Chinatown was closed by the Department of Health. And no doubt they were thrilled when it was reopened a couple of months ago as Mei Li Wah, with mostly the same menu, but with young waiters and waitresses. I actually miss the grumpy old Chinese guys at the counter. Marita and I bought a box of siopao there last week and then we decided to get a table in the restaurant. Normally, we just order takeout and bring it home; after all, this is the restaurant that used to have a “No Spitting” sign on the wall.

We ordered siomai; two orders, 4 siomais each, served on small white plates. I liked them – let’s just leave it at that. Nothing fancy, nothing spectacular. Just good, solid, tasty Chinatown fare. And for $2.50 for 4 siomais, you can’t go wrong.
